This is why we are fighting
/Sonia Pierre's Story
It all started with the heart-breaking death of a mother, leaving her 6 month old baby daughter Sonia orphaned. Sonia was suffering from acute malnutrition when she was brought to NPFS (Nos Petits Frères et Soeurs) St Damien Children's Hospital by the Missionaries of Charity.
Tiny Baby Sonia received treatment for her malnutrition at St Damien. Once recovered she was transferred to the Ste Helene Home in Kenscoff, a safe home where she found a new family and education for the next 19 years of her life.
Sonia's heart beats for goodness and she is pursuing her dreams to help the most vulnerable.
On graduation from High School, in 2011, Sonia worked as a Pharmacist's Assistant at the St Luke Hospital. Always wanting to help the sick to the best of her ability, she had a new dream: a dream to become a nurse. Thanks to the support of the St Luke Foundation for Haiti Sonia studied Nursing Science.
Since graduating, Sonia has worked as a Community Nurse in the mobile clinic in the most dangerous and marginalized areas of Port-au-Prince with Fr Rick Frechette and the Missionaries of Charity. She has been doing medical follow-ups at the homes of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged patients. One objective of the Foundation's mobile clinic is to care for people unable to travel to the health centers because of their lack of economic resources. Since September 2020, she has also been caring for patients in the Corona Virus department of the St Luke hospital.
Certainly, Sonia encounters obstacles but, she refuses to call them that, rather "challenges" and she always says, "I face it and I learn".
She always advises others to "do good because all good deeds are never forgotten". Sonia recognizes the opportunities which she has received in her life. She is so thankful to all those who have supported her in her education and helped her to become the nurse and the person who she is today. Her life so far gives her the motivation to always give the best of herself to those in need. Her strength and determination also give strength and moral support to her team members.
She dreams of having a home to care for the elderly who are abandoned in hospitals. This is of great concern to her because the rate is increasing in Haiti.
