Inauguration of the St Luke Hospital Waste Water Treatment Plant
/On May 07, 2021 St Luc Hospital celebrated the inauguration of a new wastewater treatment plant with our neighbors. In attendance were representatives from UNICEF, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Public Health and Population, and the representatives from the Albert Schweitzer Hospital (beneficiaries of an additional project!).
We all gathered to express sincere gratitude, as clean water and water treatment are critical to successful public health measures in Haiti (such as stopping outbreaks of cholera, made endemic to the country). The importance of such a system truly cannot be understated, and this feat was made possible thanks to USAID support through UNICEF.
This autonomous system treats up to 20,000 gallons of wastewater per day, which far exceeds the daily production of the hospital of 5 000 gallons. The total decontamination of the water is now done on site and eliminates operational logistics and transportation costs for our septic tank (estimated at $ 40,000 / year). These funds will be reallocated to the needs of the most vulnerable.
With the continued support of our partners and friends, we continue to move forward!
