Restoring Dignity and Saving Lives: The Work of St. Luke Haiti's Social services Department
/Every day, the Social Services Department of the St. Luke hospital opens its doors to
abandoned and vulnerable patients, providing them with the care and compassion they
desperately need. Many of these individuals arrive with nothing — no food, no access to
medicine, and no ability to pay hospital fees. As insecurity and violence escalate in Haiti,
thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes, causing a surge in displaced
families. The impact on the healthcare system is immediate, as more patients seek refuge and
treatment through our hospital’s Social Services Department.
Among them is Kelida, a 15-year-old girl with a story that reflects the growing crisis. Kelida
lived with her single mother in Delmas, but their home was overtaken by a violent armed
group operating in the metropolitan area. With nowhere else to turn, they sought shelter in a
displacement camp. Life in the camp was harsh. For six long months, they struggled with
inadequate food, unsanitary conditions, and constant fear. The toll on Kelida’s health was
devastating. Severe anemia left her frail and in urgent need of medical attention. Fortunately,
she was admitted to our hospital, where she received comprehensive care. Today, thanks to
our donors and supporters, Kelida is slowly recovering. She is being provided with food,
medical treatment, and social support to restore her strength and dignity.
But Kelida’s story is not unique. Her story is one of many. Behind every patient is a story of
resilience, courage, and hope. Many discharged patients beg to remain at the hospital,
preferring to stay within its secure and supportive environment rather than return to the
dangers of displacement camps. The psychological and emotional toll of displacement is
profound, and the hospital becomes not just a place of healing but a place of refuge.
This year, our Social Services Program has provided essential support to over 800 people.
Through food assistance, medicine, and medical fee coverage, we are committed to meeting
the needs of Haiti's most vulnerable. But our ability to continue this mission depends on the
generosity of those who believe in compassion and solidarity.
At St. Luke Haiti, every donation becomes a lifeline. Your support allows us to respond
quickly, to care deeply, and to stand by those who have been left behind. Every dollar
translates into food for the hungry, medicine for the sick, and hope for those who have lost
everything. Without you, stories like Kelida’s would end in despair. But with your help, they
become stories of triumph.
Join us in this life-saving mission. Be a part of a movement that restores dignity, saves lives,
and gives hope to the most vulnerable among us. Together, we can do more than offer
treatment — we can offer a future.
Thank you for standing with St. Luc Haiti. Thank you for believing in a better tomorrow.
